Experience matters, but so does fit
It is reasonable to ask whether a worker has experience supporting autistic children. But experience alone does not guarantee your child will feel safe with them.
Autistic children can be highly sensitive to tone, pressure, change and unfamiliar people. A worker who means well can still overwhelm your child by asking too many questions, moving too quickly or treating silence as a problem to fix.
A slower start is often better
A strong first session may look small from the outside. It might be parallel play, a short walk, sitting nearby, building Lego, drawing, watching a favourite show together or letting your child lead the activity.
The goal is not to prove everything in one shift. The goal is to help your child learn that this person is safe, predictable and not going to force connection.
Use interests as the bridge
Many autistic children connect through specific interests. That could be trains, animals, gaming, sport, maps, music, drawing, Minecraft, Pokémon, YouTube, cars, cooking or something very niche.
A good support worker does not treat those interests as random. They use them as the bridge into communication, confidence and everyday goals.
Field Day’s approach
We ask parents about sensory preferences, communication style, triggers, routines and what has helped before. We also ask what your child actually enjoys, because support should not be built only around deficits.
Where possible, we match your child with a local Sydney worker who can bring calm energy, common ground and genuine interest. A free meet and greet can also help your child see the worker before support starts.
Quick takeaway
- Autism support should respect pace and predictability.
- Interests are not distractions; they are connection points.
- A quiet first session can still be a successful first session.
